Job 33:4

“The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

The truth found in this week’s verse is pride-crushing. When we begin to allow this verse to sink in, to take root, we are confronted with the truth that this life we are living isn’t all about us.

God made me. God sustains me.

I know most of us would agree mentally with this truth, but this week, let’s ask God to make this even more true to our hearts.

There are so many areas of my self-centered heart that still seem to think I am autonomous. I can do what I want, when I want. I am my own boss.

It is by His breath that I have life.

Allow this truth to floor you. Allow it to bring you humbly before our Almighty, asking Him to help your heart to grasp this more deeply.

In our sin, we want to rule, we want to reign, and we want the credit. It is only by the grace of God that we can even desire Him. We can endure through any sufferings of this world because of this hope: God made me, God sustains me.

Lord, wretched and broken I come. Help me to know truth not just in my head, but allow it to take deep root in my heart. Show me areas of my heart and of my life that I have not surrendered to you. Reveal areas that I grip too tightly, and give me the strength to lay them down. My only hope in this life is found in You. Draw me more deeply to surrender. Amen.
