2 Timothy 1:7

Control.

We all want it, right? I think Satan likes to sugar coat this idol with terms like “planning” or “preparing.” I think Satan wants us to believe that living in fear is a normal place to live. It is okay. It is natural.

Control increases fear; fear increases control.

I seek control because I feel less fearful if I am in control. When someone else is in control, I tend to fear more. The more I fear, the more I feel like I need to control. The cycle continues.

I must confess something to you.

I am a passenger driver. When we are out as a family, my husband usually drives. My poor husband. Seriously friends, the gasps I make while he drives would lead you to believe he is driving us off of a cliff. I grip the door, pressing on my imaginary break and gasp in horror. He isn’t a bad driver. He is actually a really good driver (don’t tell him I said that!).

So why am I so scared?

I am not in control. I think I could do a better job. I don’t have faith in his ability to get us to where we are going safely.

In my flesh, when I don’t have control over a situation, my fear increases and my faith in the person who has control decreases.

But God did not give us a spirit of fear, but He gave us a Spirit of power, love and self-control.

Let’s face reality. We like to have control. We like to know what to expect.

If you have ever gone through birth before, though, you know that you have little control over how it plays out.

Yes, you can plan and research and make choices, but ultimately things like when labor will start, how long it will last, and what contractions will be like, you don’t have control over.

This can increase fear. Toward the end of pregnancy, I really battle with fear and my desire for control. I want to know when. I want to know how. I want to be in control.

We can have faith, sweet friend, that God is good. He gives us a spirit of power, love and self-control. We don’t have to fear labor, or a sick child, or a husband-driver.

Yes, we know things sometimes may not go as we hope or plan, but He gives us faith that He will give us what we need, when we need it, to trust Him during trials.
